Clock Vine is native to
Southeastern Asia, and more
precisely to India. It is an
evergreen plant and is
commonly called
Thunbergia mysorensis, Brick
& Butter Vine and Dolls'
Shoes.
The vines can grow to five
or six feet high if grown in
good conditions.
The flowers of Clock vine
are tubular, a little
deeper, about 3 in (7.6 cm)
long. They hang from the
vine in clusters. They are
usually stunning rich maroon
and yellow flowers shaped
like a slipper orchid. The
pendulous red and yellow
flowers produce a wealth of
nectar to attract
hummingbird pollinators.
Clock vines bloom well in
October. But they do not
bloom well during high
summer heat and humidity,
but they will make up for
lost time when the weather
cools off. Sunny mornings
and afternoon protection are
good for the plant. It
requires a well-drained and
fertile ground. It may need
to be cut back often to
control direction or size.
It is very easy to propagate
from cuttings in warm
weather.
Clock Vines look good in
hanging baskets, mixed
containers and arbors. It is
an easy to care for plant
that can quickly cover a
fence or pergola. The
gorgeously showy flowers and
lush foliage make this a
choice addition to any
garden. Both leaves and
blossoms are used in
arrangements. The plant is a
popular tropical garden item
because of its
attractiveness to
hummingbirds
