More commonly known as the
larkspur, the delphinium can
be found across the globe -
from our own back gardens to
the mountains of tropical
Africa. A member of the
buttercup family, the
delphinium is just one of
over 250 related species.
While poisonous, this
attractive flower remains
popular with botanists,
gardeners, florists and
flower-lovers alike.
Available in a variety of
colours from pink, to white,
to blue - the delphinium can
be found in many styles of
bouquets and arrangements
due to its versatile nature.
Most commonly seen in
floristry are the vibrant,
intense blue shades of the
cobalt blue variety of
delphinium - a popular
addition to "new baby"
bouquets... well, as long as
it's a boy!
The delphinium plant is
large, at up to 2 meters
tall. Standing proud and
erect, they need to be
carefully staked to protect
their delicate stems from
weather damage. A favourite
amongst keen gardeners, a
healthy delphinium plant
will reward its keeper with
a mass of beautiful,
delicate flowers - striking
in both colour and form.
A popular cut-flower; full
of old-world charm, yet
lending itself just as well
to simplistic, contemporary
arrangements. Whether a
Sunday morning in church or
an afternoon at a trendy
press event, the delphinium
should never look out of
place - perfectly at home,
whatever its surroundings.
Did you know?
The delphinium plant was at one
time believed to have
medicinal properties -
capable of preventing and
even curing eye-disease.
Don't be tempted to try this
at home however, as the
delphinium is indeed
poisonous!
Blue delphiniums were once
used by the people of
Transylvania to ward off
witches!
For a simple, stunning and
easy-to-arrange vase
display, simply place 6
stems of delphinium in a
tall, sleek vase. Perfect!
